One important way that I notice students and myself change the way they speak within the classroom is how we avoid profanity or swearing. Ever since we were in elementary we are taught that they are inappropriate and "bad" words. When we are at school or in a classroom, it is the societal norm to speak more formal than with a friend outside of class. Using curse words is seen as unprofessional and others may view it as even having a lower intelligence.

Another example of what we may talk about with our friends outside of class but not in class could be more personal things. It can also be seen as inappropriate to share the more intimate aspects of our lives or even the more negative parts. This could be more from the group aspect instead of the one-on-one with a  friend.  We also tend to try to be more positive in a classroom. We may not always talk about the too extreme of the world.
