Meme Analysis

For the genre of this meme I would consider it to be comedy. Honestly, depending on ones humor, a lot of college students would find that this meme to be funny and relatable, so this is why I would think that this is comedy. The context of this meme is about the life of a college student summed up in four pictures. In the first picture of the meme it is SpongeBob writing in what seems to be a very chaotic state. Some students could possibly relate to this especially when it comes to their assignments. The second picture is of Patrick holding up three dollar bills and at the bottom it says, “I have $3.” Many students can definitely relate to this even though they may not have $3 dollars exactly. It could be $20, $30, etc. In the third it is of Squidward holding what seems to be a stack of papers and he looks extremely stressed. With the work load that students have, whether that is school work and/or working a job, this is something that can hit home for many college students. In the fourth picture it is SpongeBob and Patrick together where it seems that they were out having fun. A lot of college students outside of school go out and have fun with their friends, so they would definitely be able to relate to this. The purpose of this meme was to be relatable, which I think it did just that. Maybe not everyone can relate to this or think that it is funny, but a lot of other college students would be able to. The audience that this meme is pertaining to is college students. The medium of this meme is picture form and the design of this meme is four smaller pictures of SpongeBob characters and at the top it says, “College in four pictures”.

The issue that this meme is addressing is the fact that college student lives is basically a rollercoaster. There is just so much that goes on in the lives of college student that it just seems that everything is all over the place, so they feel stressed and that everything around them may seem chaotic. This can also apply to people that aren’t college students, which I can say is true because I took a gap year and have felt or related to the meme above. Again, I think the purpose that this meme was made was so that college students had something to relate to because sometimes they aren’t able to relate to other people outside of school about their experience as a student.
