Blog 5

For my response to blog five, I am focusing on the good guy Greg meme to the left. This was one of the first meme templets, so I thought it would be fun to chose! When the "original" memes were becoming a thing, there was scumbag Steve, good guy Greg, and bad luck Brian. The scumbag Steve memes were focused on Steve making selfish and rude decisions. Steve was dressed with a furry winter coat, and a backwards hat. On the other end of the spectrum, there was bad luck Brian who was an awkward looking teenager. All of his memes were about having bad luck and learning lessons from it. Finally, I have chose a good guy Greg meme. Good guy Greg looks like what you might imagine fits the template of Steve better. He has a popped collar and appears to be smoking marijuana or a hand-rolled cigarette. Despite how he looks, all of the memes revolving around him emphasize him as being a good guy. I chose this specific meme to the left because I do that and I find it funny! It is such a small simple thing that we should all do, but many people end up getting sprite. I find it funny because it really is the smallest action, but if someone did all the small things like this in a good manner in real life, they truly would be a good person. For this meme, like most memes, I do not get much from it. Personally, I think that the meme is trying to help show that we should not judge others for how they look, because he doesn't look like a traditional "nice guy" but that does not matter. Another thing I interpret from this meme is that the little things matter. All of the subtitles on the good guy Greg memes are really small specific things that by themselves do not stand out, but really are good things to do. This meme is now ten years old, but I still think its messages work just as well now as they ever did. With most memes, they are based off of events, t.v. shows, or movies from a certain time period. With being from a specific time, I feel like even if the message of the meme can still be important, the imagine losses spread after time passes. For example, baby Yoda memes were huge when Mandalorian first was released, but now they are much less common. Personally, I think images not from t.v. shows hold up better. However, I do think there are exceptions like several SpongeBob and The Office memes.
