Growing up I was always the quiet kid, afraid that I would say something wrong and everyone would judge me for it. Because of that I strayed away from expressing my opinions. I kept to myself and felt most safe when I was silent. I think my anxiety also played a huge role in that. However, my teachers loved it. They would rave to my parents of how I was an angel and always listened to the teacher. I was a good student but hardly ever participated. As I’ve grown older I’ve realized that my opinion does matter whether people agree with it or not. I’ve learned to control my anxiety and try not to think about the worst. I remind myself that I’m not the only one who uses silence as a comfort. I’ve also realized that what Lorde states is true. Women tend to get pushed down because we are not as strong or intelligent as the men. I am studying business and unfortunately for myself, business is a male dominated industry. It can be intimidating but I hope to overcome all the challenges and show my younger self that remaining silent and timid will never get me anywhere. Lorde reminded me that life is too short and to take chances, although I have not experienced a drastic change like she did, listening to her story is a great reminder. Her words are deep and full of truth. A quote that stuck with me and I’m guessing many other people is when she states, “Death, on the other hand, is the final silence.” Death is a constant reminder that we are not immortal and we don’t know when our story will end. My goal is to leave an impact and a legacy. I want to show those around me that anything is possible and that a shy, timid girl can accomplish amazing things by simply just speaking up.
